Fire destroys a New Canaan home
Monday, January 16, 2012
-
On Sunday January 15th, New Canaan FD was alerted to a structure fire on Fawn Drive. While enroute, units were advised of a confirmed working house fire and mutual aid was immediately requested. Upon arrival of the New Canaan Fire Company Chief, it was confirmed that 80% of the home was fully involved. Engine 4 and Tanker 8 crews immediately went to work . Unfortunately, water soon became an issue as this area is non-hydranted and additional tankers were needed to sustain an adequate water supply. Crews operated for over 3 hours with assistance from Norwalk, Wilton, Weston, Vista, Pound Ridge, New Canaan Fire Company, New Canaan EMS and Ridgefield Fire. Noroton Heights provieded station coverage and responded to a residential fire alarm. The Red Cross provided assistance to the family on Fawn Drive. One Firefighter suffered a minor knee injury.

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS - SAFETY

HOLIDAY INFORMATION BULLETIN

NEVER DECORATE YOUR TREE WITH CANDLES! ! !  All trees and decorations should be located a safe distance from sources of heat such as heaters, fireplaces, stoves, television sets, candles and the like. Overloaded electrical outlets and faulty wires are a common cause of holiday-related accidents. Worn-out electrical cords and plugs should be replaced. Avoid too many plugs in one outlet. Use multi-outlet powerstrips when running many applications or decorative light screens.

All sources of electric lighting, both direct and indirect, should be in good condition and consist of equipment that has been tested and labeled or listed for the specific purpose by a recognized testing laboratory. All lighting should be turned off or better yet, disconnected, when the area is unattended. This is especially important in residential occupancies when the occupants are asleep.

RECOMMENDATIONS

http://www.fire.nist.gov/tree_fire.htm

Before natural trees are set up, the trunk should be sawed off above the opens up the sap channels in the tree so that it can take up water. Keep your tree stand water level above the cut in the trunk to prevent the tree from forming a sap seal. A sap sealed tree trunk will not draw water which is needed for it to remain fresh.

All trees should be held upright in sturdy stands having a base that issufficiently broad enough to effectively support the tree. Guy wires may be needed to steady oversized trees.

Natural trees having root balls should be moistened daily and cut natural trees should be placed in containers of water sufficient to provide at least a one day supply. A container holding at least 1 quart per inch in stem diameter is recommended.

Natural trees should remain indoors only for as long a period of time asthey are fresh. Cut trees are thirsty! Depending on tree size, they may use from two pints to one and one half gallons or more per day - so make sure to check the water level daily and supply fresh water as needed. Remove any tree that shows evidence of drying or severe shedding.

New Canaan Advertiser...

Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at a house under construction located at 57 Four Winds Lane off Ponus Ridge Wednesday night, November 9.

Arriving crews found "heavy fire" spreading up the outside of the structure, according to Fire Marshal Fred Baker.

"The fire was quickly extinguished and firefighters conducted 'overhaul' to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and no hot embers remained," Baker said.

The structure was unoccupied at the time as it was a new home at the last stretch of being finished for the new owners.

"The fire was discovered by a good samaritan who was driving on Ponus Ridge and smelled the odor and investigated," Baker said.

Mutual aid Assistance from Wilton and Pound Ridge assisted with water supply. Damage to the structure was minor and there were no reported injuries. The cause is under investigation by the New Canaan Fire Marshal's Office.
